This is a great drink to serve if you're entertaining and looking for a little extra flair in your presentation. You can use any whiskey, but a good rye whiskey is your best bet. Remember, paying a little extra for a mature whiskey will give your finished product a boost in flavor and complexity. Oak is a safe bet for wood to use, as most whiskey is aged in oak, but feel free to mix it up and try something that pairs well with the profile of your whiskey.
